Designing a Volunteer-First Experience for Temple Seva
A mobile volunteer companion for VCM temple that simplifies seva discovery, festival participation, and attendance — all in a calm, devotional flow.

Background
VCM Temple runs on a large volunteer community supporting daily services and festival-scale operations. The existing volunteer experience was functional but heavy: volunteers had to interpret long lists, rely on external coordination, and navigate multiple screens just to find seva, confirm availability, or stay updated during festivals.
This redesign aimed to make the app feel calm, clear, and quick — so volunteers can open it and instantly know:
what’s happening, what seva is available, what I’m assigned to, and what I should do next.

Redesign Focus
I focused on the volunteer surfaces that shape daily behavior and festival readiness the most:
Home, Festival Details, Groups, Profile, and Polls.
Each redesign reduces cognitive load, increases participation, and makes service feel more personal.
Home
A guided home experience that anchors volunteers with a devotional greeting, quick sadhana snapshot, upcoming festivals, and assigned seva — making “what’s next” instantly visible.

Festival Details
Festival pages redesigned as participation spaces: rich imagery, streamlined schedules, and a clear Join Seva flow — turning festivals into moments to act, not just read.

Groups
Community-first group discovery with visual cards, clear group types (Festival/Regular), and immediate context — helping volunteers scan, feel the purpose, and join confidently.

Profile
A living volunteer identity hub combining sadhana progress, milestones, seva history, and availability. The profile becomes a source of motivation and continuity, not just settings.

Polls
Action-first polls that surface urgency, coordinator, response progress, and one clear CTA — making participation quick during high-volume festival operations.

Impact
Reduced volunteer uncertainty by making seva status, availability, and next actions visible at a glance.
Faster seva discovery and joining through scan-friendly groups and clearer context.
Higher festival readiness by converting festival pages into direct participation flows.
Stronger response loops via polls designed for speed, urgency, and clarity.
More personal volunteer continuity through profiles that reflect progress and service history.
Reflection
This redesign reinforced that operational products succeed when they feel quietly obvious. Volunteers aren’t looking for features — they’re looking for certainty, speed, and dignity in how service is coordinated. My North Star was simple:
make every action take seconds, not thought.
When the system becomes easy to trust and repeat, volunteers can focus fully on seva — and the product gets out of the way.
